CO alarm standards know when you are protected

“One of the qualities of liberty is that, as long as it is being striven after, it goes on expanding. Therefore, the man who stands in the midst of the struggle and says, "I have it," merely shows by doing so that he has just lost it.” Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906, bio link)

Test the furnace or boiler; test all combustion systems
If combustion systems are already producing CO  in concentrations enough to hurt someone and then struggle at venting, the danger increases; CO generation could increase and combustion gases will more likely get into breathable air. It is vital when verifying the safety, integrity and compliance of a combustion system like a furnace or a boiler, that a carbon monoxide gas sample be evaluated as well the venting pressure of the exhaust gases.

All combustion equipment should be performance verified  that it is operating within manufacturer and code requirements when installed and then when serviced. If it is not verified, what is the purpose of the instructions or the tune-up?

The technician can make corrections to improve the safety  and efficiency of the combustion system under the normal working conditions it is expected to perform under. There are times however, when competing building pressures make the task more difficult and the building may cause some back drafting anomalies. It is a good idea to pressure test the building and the mechanical room as well when choosing the location of the combustion system and after the fact during routine service & maintenance.
