CO alarm standards know when you are protected

“The path of least resistance and least trouble is a mental rut already made. It requires troublesome work to undertake the alternation of old beliefs.” John Dewey (1859-1952, bio link)

Is it “normal” or “accepted” levels of carbon monoxide?
Over the years, the accepted levels have decreased.

Care should be taken  when discussing carbon monoxide levels of concern. We are not all of equal health and many of us are impacted sooner at lower concentrations of the poison than those in good health. At one time all people were generally categorized as equally vulnerable to CO. Medical schools discussed high level exposures where skin color and heart rate were the crown symptoms and hyperbaric therapy the only attempt at retarding damages. Those times are changing.

So, what are normal levels of carbon monoxide?  The levels of carbon monoxide outside your home or building are “normal” for that time you measured. If your home or building has levels higher than what is outside, they are not “Normal”. Medical studies continue to prove oxidative stress is compounding and even causing varieties of poor health symptoms and consequential diseases. There is not a lot a person can do to change the outside levels of CO in a collective combustion culture, except reduce their own discharges of combustion gas; collectively this would have an impact.

But a person can impact the levels of CO  inside their homes and buildings. Do not use unvented heating or cooking systems indoors. Have all combustion appliances tuned and adjusted to limit carbon monoxide production. Do not let cars & trucks operate or idle inside garages and many more conscious attempts to reduce exposures. Begin measuring the air you are in with the commonly used low level testing & alarm devices.

The studies of air quality problems around the globe  and the effects on the health of universal citizens clearly portray a hazard deployed on what seems to be dumbfounded humans. Despite the warnings, the charge ahead to burn more oil & gas & coal is ringing with the insanity and horror of a kamikaze, while the increase in choking air continues, and millions suffer the consequences. Measurement is education connecting the dots in the darkness.

Increased education, awareness can prevent carbon monoxide poisoning
Minnesota Department of Commerce

SAINT PAUL, MN – Each year about 50,000 people visit emergency rooms in the United States for CO poisoning, and more than 500 die each year from this silent, odorless, colorless gas. As part of Winter Hazard Awareness Week (November 5-9), the Minnesota Department of Commerce warns Minnesotans of the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning and to take steps to avoid this “silent killer.”
