Carbon Monoxide News - July 31, 2012

“A day without laughter is a day wasted.”
Charlie Chaplin (1889-1977, bio link)

Children of the fire - still developing from the first spark of creation
We have all been poisoned by carbon monoxide and we all will be again. There is no guesswork here. The degrees of oxidative stress begin slowly, imperceptible to some and as soon as exogenous concentrations of carbon monoxide are first inhaled. Internal oxygen displacement begins, even at the lowest levels.

You just can’t escape from the fact of combustion and carbon monoxide in the year 2012 or any year that we began exchanging stories and news events, even around the campfires of our “way-back” ancestors. Medical science tells us that we even produce our own CO endogenously and our body needs it. We couldn’t possibly achieve this unless we were a combustion system. And we must produce just the right amount to survive.

Early on we found fire, and moved a piece of it and used it for our purposes of light, protection from the beasts who feared fire, and for warmth of heat and cooking things to eat we had been eating raw. This respected guest could strike out and injure us or we could be careless or reckless and injure ourselves and/or others. Nothing has changed as we continue to reinvent fires of many kinds and fuel sources and find new ways to surprisingly poison ourselves and others; “ I didn’t know you couldn’t bring a barbeque inside?!”

The literature of fact, fiction, fables, historical theocracies and entertainment throughout the ages have placed fire in the hands of the Almighty and the big Demon, the wise man and the fool, the healer and afflicted. We have the threat of eternal fire looming over our spirits like a storm cloud intent on wrecking our plans, our dreams and our efforts.

Our spiritual leaders wield images of fire like a mighty sword into the burning images of pain that our first touch into the flame generated. We know it can burn us and leave lasting scars, and have us suffer the most painful of living deaths because we have all been burned and can relate.

The invisible poison has been as mysterious and pre-emptive as the ghosts of our cultures, striking down our kind in numbers as if in a wrath of punishments and, all unseen. Fire we can run from, but how do you run away from the ghost, the breath of fire?

Perhaps dust is the wrong analogy: Remember man, that thou art fire and into fire thou shall return, and on fire thou shall remain. Who is responsible for all this fire? Who is responsible for the air you breathe? Who tends your fires?

If you don’t test, you don’t know. Save a brother or sister or anyone, begin measuring your air today and be alerted to levels of carbon monoxide before you have already begun feeling symptoms of headache, nausea, dizziness, shortness of breath or worse. Bob Dwyer, CSME Carbon Monoxide Safety

Carbon Monoxide News - July 30, 2012

“Men try to run life according to their wishes; life runs itself according to necessity.” Jean Toomer (1894-1967, bio link)

Combustion
In the laws of fire and combustion where fuel, air and heat are required to be within specific ranges for complete combustion to occur, if you take one of the components away, combustion stops. If air and fuel are not proportioned exactly through the heat or the flame then the quality of combustion degrades.

A heating technician or a boiler engineer measures fuel pressure, combustion gas temperature and content for oxygen, nitrogen oxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and the exiting combustion gas pressure. They also measure the electric currents for system operation, including fan controls. If the system has ducted air delivery, they will include those measurement verifications of pressure, temperature and airflow as well. The heating technician monitors the systems controls to ensure the air fuel mixtures satisfy the requirements of complete combustion.

A heating contractor or boiler engineer may be diagnosing a fuel fired heating system that is operating with restrictions, producing no heat, interrupted operation, has a noise or smells or there is an overall lack of comfort felt by the customer. Combustion analysis might determine an incorrect % oxygen or temperature in the exhaust gas resulting in efficiency losses and perhaps unsafe levels of carbon monoxide generation. Testing the results of combustion through analysis can help assure safe and efficient performance.

“Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.” Winston Churchill (1874-1965, bio link)

It is all about testing and measurement. Excuses won’t stop the poisoning.
Carbon monoxide is not that hard to detect. But you have to have test instruments or a good working carbon monoxide alarm to accomplish the task. The symptoms are well known, they just have to be recognized by the sufferer sooner and by the health care provider who is presented the symptoms.

The victim can also be tested, the air can be tested and boilers and all appliances can be tested. The only thing left to do is begin testing.

Carbon Monoxide News - July 28, 2012

“All existing things are really one. We regard those that are beautiful and rare as valuable, and those that are ugly as foul and rotten The foul and rotten may come to be transformed into what is rare and valuable, and the rare and valuable into what is foul and rotten.” Zhuangzi (BC 369-BC 286, bio link)

Protection from ourselves; who is responsible for the air you breathe?
Many medical practitioner’s diagnostic habits exclude testing patients for carbon monoxide poisoning despite the symptoms being presented. People experiencing one or more known symptoms of CO poisoning do not give carbon monoxide a thought when they reach for the aspirin bottle.

These symptoms include reactions that mimic or have similarity to food poisoning, flu, headache, nausea, tiredness, depression, weakness, disorientation, seizures, complicated angina, blurry vision, rapid heartbeat, Parkinsonism, multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer’s symptoms.

Despite all of these known symptoms, they remain to not be enough to instigate testing to confirm or rule out the fact of oxygen displacement by CO as the causal factor. New generations of health professionals may be required to address these symptoms with tests administered as easily as blood pressure, weight & temperature.

Ironically, many of these symptoms are treated with medications that may only numb or dress up the symptoms without providing relief, they may only result in an increase in cognitive or psychological maladies and methemoglobin surges.

An inexpensive, non-invasive carboxyhemoglobin % (COHb%) test can yield vital information in less than 30 seconds of time. A low level carbon monoxide alarm or a personal CO monitor can help prevent many of these symptoms from even starting simply by discovery and immediate corrective action. What are you waiting for? Carbon Monoxide News - July 27, 2012

“A perfection of means, and confusion of aims, seems to be our main problem.” Albert Einstein (1879-1955, bio link)

Carbon monoxide alarm inquiry
Michael, I agree it does sound a little cruel and absurd that a blind person, living in provided housing where the threat of carbon monoxide poisoning is guarded against, must suffer a variety of poor health symptoms before the audible sound alerts them that they are being poisoned, and that this notice could take weeks or longer or never. “ Shouldn’t they have better alarms?” Yes they should.

I would add that this weakness in this sanctioned carbon monoxide protection is true regardless of anyone’s impairment or housing type. The way the alarms are required to operate by standard notation or law and not required to have a digital display, we are all “blind” to increasing and harmful levels of the poison where those are the only alarms present.

The alarms with digital displays are at least allowed to display (but not alarm) when the concentrations are above 30 PPM and under 70 in the U.S. and Canada. This is better, but this visual feature is still around 3 times higher than some fire department citizen evacuation protocols. More fire departments are beginning evacuations as 10 PPM of CO is breached in a building upon their discovery.

We are all vulnerable to carbon monoxide exposure and the consequences of “how much, for how long and, what is the overall state of our health?” It is most logical to be alerted to the lowest possible levels before symptoms begin to appear. Why should the citizen consumer “sit in the dark” until the alarm sounds at high, length of time registered concentrations?

Carbon Monoxide News - July 26, 2012

“Gold medals aren't really made of gold. They're made of sweat, determination, and a hard-to-find alloy called guts.” Dan Gable (1948, bio link)

The human body is an aerobic organism, one living or occurring only in the presence of oxygen. Please think of the impact oxygen has within the body and become alerted to the sequelae associated with the reduction of oxygen in that body through the inhalation of carbon monoxide. This chain reaction of events can be subtle at the onset at levels less than 50 PPM and easily not correlated to CO exposure. Chronic exposures under 30 PPM may result in even longer subtleties, also with a variety of poor health symptoms.

In this case we reference
carboxyhemoglobinemia - a toxic condition that results from inhaling and absorbing carbon monoxide gas through the airways and into blood; carbon monoxide combines with hemoglobin and displaces oxygen in the blood. This is also referred to as carbon monoxide poisoning and can be measured in % of concentration in the hemoglobin in blood.

The need to test symptomatic patients daily is becoming more and more vital as exposures to the poisonous gas increases as the reliance on fossil fuels in the human culture continues and increases. This can be performed routinely,
non-invasively, and perhaps at the same time blood pressure is being measured. What would keep a health care provider from taking this test when known CO poisoning symptoms are presented to them by a patient?

The medical profession, founded on trial and error, research, practice and interactive science has until recently spent limited time in the study and daily diagnosis of chronic human exposures to common low level carbon monoxide atmospheres. Interviewed physicians & health care professionals admittedly have received little more than symptomatic discourses on acute exposures where the consequences of rapid and extreme levels of the poison have resulted in severe oxidative stress, disability and death. None would disagree, that supplemental oxygen therapy or pressurized oxygen therapy is the antidote for acute CO poisoning. The antidote prevents further damage, but damage has been done and, there are consequences.

Every day is a good day to test for carbon monoxide. There are many ways and places to test. Bob Dwyer, CSME Carbon Monoxide Safety

Carbon Monoxide News - July 25, 2012

“Courage is knowing what not to fear.”
Plato (428/427 BC – 348/347 BC, bio link)

Your measurement makes a difference
Carbon monoxide is a very commonly encountered gas in the world of human beings where combustion systems are used for heat, transportation, cooking, electrical generation, lighting, decorative ambiance, manufacturing, entertainment, construction, and in other ways. Ignorance of the dangers associated with the gas is also prevalent.

Poisoning from the gas is becoming more common and unfortunately is most often missed as the cause of the symptoms by those poisoned. Nuisance CO poisonings are not recognized very often by health professionals as well. Do you know why?

Please wear your personal carbon monoxide monitor when you leave your home and intend to drive or get in a vehicle or intend to go into another or other buildings. Your measurement might be the educational measurement that also saves a life or reduces the length of a mystery illness. Bob Dwyer, CSME Carbon Monoxide Safety
