Make sure that whoever installs, works on or services your gas, oil, coal, wood or other combustion appliance uses a combustion analyzer that includes a carbon monoxide sensor. If tuned correctly, the modern appliance should produce minimal to trace amounts of carbon monoxide.

Ask your firefighters where you live, what the levels of carbon monoxide are that prompt their wearing self contained breathing apparatus when in carbon monoxide atmospheres. Ask them at what level of carbon monoxide they require building evacuation.

What are the symptoms of CO poisoning? Consult with your physician!
CO poisoning mimics many common illnesses, such as food poisoning. It is most frequently misdiagnosed as a flu-like syndrome.

The following is a list of common symptoms.
· headaches · loss of hearing · dizziness · depression · blurry vision
· cardiac arrest · disorientation· respiratory failure · weakness
· vomiting · coma · painful discomfort · loss of consciousness ·muscle aches,
· soreness · memory disorders · seizures · nausea · rapid heartbeat
· chronic tiredness · slurry speech · additional symptoms of illnesses

This list is not meant to serve as a diagnosis of carbon monoxide poisoning. It is meant to provide general information on known poisoning symptoms. Oxidative stress causes a chain reaction in the body due to the interruption of oxygen intake. Get out and stay out of CO atmosphere’s.
If you have symptoms of CO poisoning, get tested by your health care provider as soon as possible. What is the value in not testing?

Carbon Monoxide Exposures; help yourself by being aware
Bob Dwyer, CSME Carbon Monoxide Safety
Your home or the building you work in or visit may contain malfunctioning oil, gas or wood furnaces, boilers, water heaters, space heaters, cooking systems or fireplaces that are already producing large amounts of CO. Each and every one of these systems require thorough testing to assure their safety and efficiency. They do not need to produce dangerous levels of CO if working properly.

Your hired technician should have a combustion analyzer, leak detectors and carbon monoxide detection instrumentation at minimum to complete the work correctly. The number of consumers that have their home combustion appliances serviced by certified technicians who use specific test instruments for measurement verifications is still quite low compared to the number of systems in use. Do you get a detailed measurement report when you have your furnace tested or inspected?

You may also be exposed to CO on a boat, on a bus, in a car, in a house, on a street, at a construction site, almost everywhere; be careful!
Whenever you barbeque, always cook in open outside air; even open sided carports cannot insure that harmful gases will be dispersed safely. Never use these charcoal, propane, natural gas, wood or other similarly fueled unvented barbeque systems indoors. There are many types of open exhaust systems that should never be in operation inside buildings and even in some roof port or awning situations. Know the difference! Who is responsible for the air you breathe?

Fire Department Issues Warning After Residents Ignore Carbon Monoxide Alarms
Patch.com By Noah Cohen
Teaneck fire officials are urging residents to immediately report carbon monoxide alarms after they said some tenants in a Prince Street apartment building ignored and disconnected the devices. "This is the third apartment building recently where some building residents ignored their alarms," Teaneck Fire Chief Anthony Verley said. "Your notification of the fire department assists both you, your family and your neighbors. Do not delay.”

Carbon Monoxide & Health  Bob Dwyer, CSME Carbon Monoxide Safety
It is of primary importance that the health symptoms and the effects of CO poisoning are clearly understood, recognized, tested for, and remediated. Carbon monoxide at a high concentration is a deadly poison and in lesser concentrations can cause or compound illness symptoms for all people, especially those who have vulnerable or pre-existing health conditions. Pregnancy is critical to protect from CO exposure, especially for the fetus. The traditional method to test for CO in people is a blood test, followed by the blood sample sent to a lab for analysis.

Test or get tested: Health care providers should be equipped to blood-gas and analyze or alternatively, test with a pulse CO-oxymeter or breath analysis module for immediate, non-invasive carboxyhemoglobin % measurements for all patients displaying symptoms of CO poisoning. The standard therapy requires supplemental oxygen, ventilatory support and monitoring the heart rate. Hyperbaric therapy may also be prescribed or required for life safety.

Antrim Times ANTRIM - Borough Council's Environmental Health team is advising residents and landlords to check the make of their Carbon Monoxide alarm. Sensor Safe Ltd is concerned about a potential safety issue with their Carbon Monoxide Alarm SF80190.

WARNING: COMBUSTION SYSTEMS AHEAD
There may be many different types of combustion systems you encounter every day. For some people there may be hundreds or even thousands where extreme automotive interactions occurs. An average neighborhood dweller may encounter a half a dozen or so before lunch (excluding cars & trucks).

Because of the large number of potential CO sources especially in urban areas, it is a highly recommended practice for responders to CO alarm calls and other servicing technicians to measure and know how much carbon monoxide is outside in the air before entering a building; this means home health care providers as well. Do you know how much carbon monoxide you live and work in?
