Carbon Monoxide News - July 14, 2012

“We work because it's a chain reaction; each subject leads to the next.” Charles Eames (1907-1978, bio link)

Two circumstances make CO a hazard
· Carbon monoxide becomes a hazard when it is produced  in high enough concentrations to hurt someone. The fact of its generation of injurious concentrations presents a hazardous condition.

· Exposure to these injurious concentrations is the second  needed circumstance. Automobiles and other vehicles have open exhaust systems. Most gas cooking systems are unvented. Gas & oil water heaters, furnaces & boilers may be designed with vents & chimneys but still have ways for combustion gas to escape. Testing of systems is vital to prevention of injury & death and can result in increased energy efficiency.

It is vital that every combustion system used for heating water, air or used for cooking gets thoroughly tested  to minimize the threat of carbon monoxide generation and exposure. If the installer or the person servicing the equipment does not test it or tells you it does not need testing because it is new, find another person to do your work.

CO poisoning mimics many common illnesses,  such as food poisoning. It is most frequently misdiagnosed as a flu-like syndrome.
