“To reform a world, to reform a nation, no wise man will undertake; and all but foolish men know, that the only solid, though a far slower reformation, is what each begins and perfects on himself.”
Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881, bio link)

When air pollution threatens the health of people,  there are steps taken to alert people of vulnerable health to stay indoors. Every year there are more days in more cities worldwide where vulnerable people and even not so vulnerable people are warned about engaging in any physical activities outside due to the harmfulness of the atmosphere. Our air is being polluted by the consequences of acquiring fuels and their uses in providing energy for mankind.

Another calendar year blends into the new numerical order  of the year known to be 2013. We will no doubt note again the irony of the arguments regarding the strictness of air pollution regulations. Those arguing for less regulation may not be noticing they are arguing for more unhealthy air quality days. Are they really thinking about all of this? Do they really want more days where you can’t go outside? Less regulations mean dirtier, unhealthier air. Is this really what the goal is? I don’t want to believe it is.

Wood smoke can add to air pollution
Columbia Basin Herald
OLYMPIA - Gathering round the fire is a time-honored tradition in winter, but sometimes that fire will add to winter air pollution problems, according to the state Department of Health. "People most sensitive to air pollution are infants and children, adults 65 and older and those who suffer from respiratory infections, heart and lung (including asthma) disease, or have a history of stoke or diabetes," the Department of Health said…. "Sensitive people may have problems sooner and at lower levels of air pollution," the press release said. "The level of air pollution that causes health problems is different for each person. A simple activity such as taking a walk or walking the dog may cause problems for some people."
