Scientists warn of poor air quality, call for emissions reduction

While hot and humid summer temperatures are long gone from this area, some Maryland and Washington residents experienced air quality close to typical midyear levels earlier this month…The Maryland Department of the Environment declared a code orange air quality alert starting Dec. 2 for the Washington metropolitan area and other parts of the state, indicating that air pollution conditions surpassed the healthy level for certain health-sensitive groups, including children, the elderly and those with respiratory problems.
