Auto pollution in congested use areas trigger serious health concerns
BRT is injurious to our health
Daily Pioneer
The Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Corridor, which has drawn criticism due to persistent traffic snarls, is also posing grave health hazards to residents of colonies located in its vicinity. Emission of pollutants such as Carbon Monoxide (CO), Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Hydrocarbons and particulate matter (PM) increase by over 50 per cent on BRT roads due to prolonged and frequent halts of vehicles. Experts say that these pollutants can lead to various chronic respiratory ailments and may affect mental condition too.

How does carbon monoxide harm you again? When carbon monoxide is inhaled into the lungs and bonds with hemoglobin in blood, it forms Carboxyhemoglobin (COHb). CO displaces the oxygen in the blood stream and will affect all major organs and muscles.

Air is breathed in and the oxygen & nitrogen are sent through the molecule transfer channels of the human body. The hemoglobin within our blood carries oxygen to every cell in our body. With a good diet, fresh air and working parts, a human has an ability to maintain equilibrium and a healthy metabolism.

Quite simply, carbon monoxide prevents oxygen from being used by the body. Every part of the body needs oxygen. If carbon monoxide is in the air breathed in, it takes the place of oxygen as it transfers to the hemoglobin in blood through the respiratory system.

It is known that CO has an affinity to hemoglobin binding sites over 200 times greater than oxygen. Fetal hemoglobin has an even greater affinity for oxygen than the mother’s because of oxygen needed in reserves for required rapid growth; carbon monoxide binds even more aggressively then and related anomalies occur.

CO does not easily unload from these cells and is why oxygen therapy, ventilatory support and monitoring the heart rate are critical to recovery. That is also why prevention of exposure to carbon monoxide at all levels is preferred. Bob Dwyer, CSME Carbon Monoxide Safety (Excerpt from CO Safety for Health Care Providers; Dwyer)
