Nitrogen pollution: another of Lebanon's blights
The Daily Star

BEIRUT: Pollution caused mostly by car emissions in the capital can reach levels as high as two thirds over the global limit, increasing respiratory problems and the long-term risk of developing lung cancer, a newly published study has found.

Tightness increases the pressure differences within a house or building. Buildings may have been over tightened in an effort to save energy. This may result in insufficient combustion air for our hydrocarbon fueled appliances, if they are utilizing the air from inside the space.

This building tightness can trap pollutants inside. It is not uncommon to find sickening concentrations of CO and CO2, NO & NO2 left over in buildings from propane or gasoline fueled pressure washers, floor buffers, concrete saws, construction space heaters and other systems hours after they have been utilized.

Leaky duct work in homes (when ducts are in unconditioned locations like attics and crawl spaces) that have air distribution systems and Category I vented gas appliances can also result in opposite pressures and appliance back-drafting if they are in the main body of the building. Duct leakage measurement tests should be performed to quantify quality of ducted delivery air.

We live in a time when the fires of combustion threaten all people in every land. This is the common enemy. Bob Dwyer, CSME Carbon Monoxide Safety

The lowest U.L. 2034 & CSA 6.19 carbon monoxide alarm test point is:
- 70 PPM to 149 PPM – resist one hour, must alarm before 4 hours
Please read the alarm information on the package and in the instructions. Know when your fire department and emergency responders begin wearing their breathing apparatus and what their civilian evacuation levels are for carbon monoxide; it may be before 70 PPM. It is for pregnant women, infants & children, the elderly and all people of vulnerable health. Bob Dwyer, CSME Carbon Monoxide Safety

Increased education, awareness can prevent carbon monoxide poisoning
Minnesota Department of Commerce

SAINT PAUL, MN – Each year about 50,000 people visit emergency rooms in the United States for CO poisoning, and more than 500 die each year from this silent, odorless, colorless gas. As part of Winter Hazard Awareness Week (November 5-9), the Minnesota Department of Commerce warns Minnesotans of the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning and to take steps to avoid this “silent killer.”
