Carbon Monoxide News - May 23, 2012

“If you improve or tinker with something long enough, eventually it will break or malfunction.” Arthur Bloch (1948, information link)

Hypoxia is a deficiency in the amount of oxygen reaching body tissues. This reduction of oxygen causes a very strong drive to correct the deficiency which results in various stresses on all bodily functions; the greater the deficiency, the greater the trauma and dysfunction. When a person inhales carbon monoxide, a chain reaction begins and compounds according to how much CO for how long and, what the existing health conditions of this person are. Fire Safety & Awareness Week Resources Fire Safety & Awareness Week is underway and code officials are getting safety messages out to the public. For example, John Kuehl, Building Official for the cities of Monterey and Pacific Grove, Calif., posted a YouTube video on the importance of smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. The city of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, are also educating consumers on the importance of codes, permit requirements and highlighting special Building Safety Month events at city hall this week. On the Building Safety Month YouTube channel, there are additional videos to help you plan activities.

For tips and resources on Fire Safety & Awareness provided by the ICC Foundation, USFA, and Building Safety Month Presenting Sponsor, AMCA International, please visit the Building Safety Month website.

How much carbon monoxide poisoning training did you receive?
Whether you are currently an administrator or active health care provider, the answer is most likely similar to these; “very little”, “none that I can remember”, “less than 15 minutes”. Lack of education about carbon monoxide has resulted in limited testing of patients for CO poisoning symptoms that just don’t seem to go away.

Interviewed physicians & health care professionals admittedly have received little more than symptomatic discourses on acute exposures where the consequences of rapid and extreme levels of the poison have resulted in severe oxidative stress, disability and death. None would disagree, that supplemental oxygen therapy or pressurized oxygen therapy is the antidote for acute CO poisoning.

Many, maybe most medical practitioner’s diagnostic habits however, exclude testing patients for carbon monoxide poisoning despite the symptoms being presented. These symptoms include reactions that mimic or have similarity to food poisoning, flu, headache, nausea, tiredness, depression, weakness, and disorientation, seizures, complicated angina, blurry vision, rapid heartbeat, Parkinsonism, multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer’s symptoms.

Despite all of these known symptoms, they remain to not be enough to instigate testing to confirm or rule out the fact of oxygen displacement by CO as the causal factor. New generations of health professionals may be required to address these symptoms with tests administered as easily as blood pressure, weight & temperature.

Ironically, many of these symptoms are treated with medications that may only numb or dress up the symptoms without providing relief; they may only result in an increase in cognitive or psychological maladies and methemoglobin surges.

Carbon Monoxide News - May 18, 2012

“Enthusiasm is the yeast that makes your hopes shine to the stars.”
Henry Ford (1863-1947, bio link)

Poisoning from carbon monoxide can go undetected though  a person might be experiencing symptoms every day. One carbon molecule (C) bound with one oxygen (O) molecule references the chemical symbol for carbon monoxide as CO. CO is measured in parts per million or PPM; out of a million molecules of air, how many PPM are CO molecules?

CO is produced when the action of fire is incomplete. There is not always an odor when CO is present, though you can smell lawn mower or auto exhaust and motor boat and other blended exhausts most of the time when they are running or idling. CO itself is odorless.
Bob Dwyer, CSME Carbon Monoxide Safety

Auto pollution in congested use areas trigger serious health concerns
BRT is injurious to our health
Daily Pioneer
The Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Corridor, which has drawn criticism due to persistent traffic snarls, is also posing grave health hazards to residents of colonies located in its vicinity. Emission of pollutants such as Carbon Monoxide (CO), Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Hydrocarbons and particulate matter (PM) increase by over 50 per cent on BRT roads due to prolonged and frequent halts of vehicles. Experts say that these pollutants can lead to various chronic respiratory ailments and may affect mental condition too.

How does carbon monoxide harm you again? When carbon monoxide is inhaled into the lungs and bonds with hemoglobin in blood, it forms Carboxyhemoglobin (COHb). CO displaces the oxygen in the blood stream and will affect all major organs and muscles.

Air is breathed in and the oxygen & nitrogen are sent through the molecule transfer channels of the human body. The hemoglobin within our blood carries oxygen to every cell in our body. With a good diet, fresh air and working parts, a human has an ability to maintain equilibrium and a healthy metabolism.

Quite simply, carbon monoxide prevents oxygen from being used by the body. Every part of the body needs oxygen. If carbon monoxide is in the air breathed in, it takes the place of oxygen as it transfers to the hemoglobin in blood through the respiratory system.

It is known that CO has an affinity to hemoglobin binding sites over 200 times greater than oxygen. Fetal hemoglobin has an even greater affinity for oxygen than the mother’s because of oxygen needed in reserves for required rapid growth; carbon monoxide binds even more aggressively then and related anomalies occur.

CO does not easily unload from these cells and is why oxygen therapy, ventilatory support and monitoring the heart rate are critical to recovery. That is also why prevention of exposure to carbon monoxide at all levels is preferred. Bob Dwyer, CSME Carbon Monoxide Safety (Excerpt from CO Safety for Health Care Providers; Dwyer)
