If there ever was a case to get the attention of the medical community, this following first story is another one that might make a difference in getting them to get the technology that in less than a minute could have saved this CO poisoning victim a lot of pain, suffering and grief. Why Wait for the Alarm or Injury? How much CO outside? How much CO inside?
Entry testing will decrease the frequency of CO poisoning because you found it in the space you entered. Always test air outside before entering; establish base reference. If upon discovery the carbon monoxide levels are at or above the emergency levels used by emergency responders you must respond accordingly to their instructions. If you don’t know what those instructions are, call them and find out. It would be wise to incorporate their rules into your protocol.
Personal carbon monoxide alarms are recommended to be worn by all service providers as they enter buildings. These systems are as easy to get used to as cell phones and wrist or pocket watches. Many technicians use the CO function on their combustion analyzer for this entry test. That is ok, but what is protecting them when they are using it as it was designed, to test flue gases? Use a dedicated carbon monoxide test instrument for entry testing.
In some urban areas, especially those sitting in valley’s or basins, the presence of CO in the ambient air is chronic due to automotive influences as well as the countless number of combustion systems all vented into the air space from industrial, commercial and residential buildings. Sometime the air outside is not healthy. There is not a whole lot a person can do about it unless society takes steps to reduce the dangers to themselves. The more you test, the more you will find. Who do you rely on for protecting you from this poisonous gas?
Carbon monoxide is measured in Parts per Million or PPM; out of a million molecules of air, how many are carbon monoxide. The health effects of breathing in PPM of CO can vary significantly due to age, sex, weight and overall state of health of the person breathing in the gases.
Even people of good health may be experiencing CO poisoning if symptoms include headaches, sinus & head pressure, constant stuffiness, flu-like, dizziness or even chronic tiredness. With the variety of health symptoms presented, a variety of treatments have been tried, many of them self prescribed. How often do you or your health care provider think of CO poisoning when you have one or more of the common symptoms? Do you take responsibility for knowing what is in the air you breathe? Who do you rely on for protecting you from this poisonous gas, from carbon monoxide?
It is a good thing that people around the world are working at understanding combustion and working to reduce exposures to poisonous gases. It is a good thing that private and public entities are working together to reduce poisonings. Let’s not forget to read the packaging on carbon monoxide alarms, and read the instructions and see who our good intentions have left behind; the vulnerable and those susceptible to levels of carbon monoxide that are harmful and undetected by the alarms utilized and offered.

Fetal hemoglobin has a much greater affinity for oxygen than an adult so that the developing fetus has adequate oxygen storage for normal healthy growth. Adult hemoglobin is known to have an affinity for carbon monoxide at 200 times greater than O2. Therefore the displacement of oxygen with CO in the fetus is greater still. It is vital that we protect the pregnant woman and her fetus from the lower levels of CO they may encounter. Be careful with those generators during power outages. Keep your baby and yourself safe. Protect yourself from carbon monoxide injury, death and liability
The use of a personal CO monitor about the size of a cell phone and equipped with a good sensor with limited cross sensitivities and, that is digitally active as low as 5 PPM, alarming no later than 35 PPM, is a top recommendation for every service provider in a variety of occupations.
It comes down to our most basic question: who is responsible for the air you breathe? This may be vital or even life saving for police entering homes on a domestic call, to fire and EMS responders on a heart attack call. These events happen all over the world and there are times when the responders are sickened or have even expired from air contaminated with carbon monoxide.
Home health nurses are already going into homes where people are experiencing many of the symptoms on the list noted as potential CO poisoning. This is a great CO Safety opportunity! It is advised that home health nurses diligently asses the levels of the patients home air with the personal CO monitor they also carry for their own protection. There may be a CO alarm in the space they are visiting but it may not be health protective for the vulnerable patient living there.
These lower levels of CO may be the complicating factor of their symptoms and the cause might be missed. This misdiagnosis leads to medicinal applications that may not even be needed if the contaminant was discovered. It also compounds the patients stress, moods and overall state of health. Please don't miss the opportunity; measure the air and measure the patient.
The next steps in the home health nurse's routine would also include the non-invasive testing of the patients COHb levels and to also check for methemoglobin levels to help determine if any of their specific medications are restricting oxygen delivery to any degree and compounding symptoms. They should be aware of the carbon monoxide in air evacuation levels used by fire, emergency and medical technicians and act accordingly upon discovery.
The home health nurse should also measure the patients home air for carbon dioxide levels (CO2). Air that becomes stuffy with air because the building was tightened to save heating fuel or cooling costs can lead to an abundance of CO2 and lead to additional oxidative stress and discomfort.
Heating contractors and boiler fitters should know the quality of the space they are working in, especially since they are assuming the liability of specific combustion systems. That would include boiler fitters, other water heater installers and any technician installing or servicing a gas appliance. They too should be utilizing personal CO monitors. The likeliness of these technicians working in chronic exposure levels of CO is quite high.
It is also advised that you record the levels of carbon monoxide upon entering a building and how much was in it when you left. If you don’t test, you don’t know. Bob Dwyer, CSME Carbon Monoxide Safety

Protect yourself from carbon monoxide injury, death and liability
The use of a personal CO monitor about the size of a cell phone and equipped with a good sensor with limited cross sensitivities and, that is digitally active as low as 5 PPM, alarming no later than 35 PPM, is a top recommendation for every service provider in a variety of occupations.
It comes down to our most basic question: who is responsible for the air you breathe? This may be vital or even life saving for police entering homes on a domestic call, to fire and EMS responders on a heart attack call. These events happen all over the world and there are times when the responders are sickened or have even expired from air contaminated with carbon monoxide.
Home health nurses are already going into homes where people are experiencing many of the symptoms on the list noted as potential CO poisoning. This is a great CO Safety opportunity! It is advised that home health nurses diligently asses the levels of the patients home air with the personal CO monitor they also carry for their own protection. There may be a CO alarm in the space they are visiting but it may not be health protective for the vulnerable patient living there.
These lower levels of CO may be the complicating factor of their symptoms and the cause might be missed. This misdiagnosis leads to medicinal applications that may not even be needed if the contaminant was discovered. It also compounds the patients stress, moods and overall state of health. Please don't miss the opportunity; measure the air and measure the patient.
The next steps in the home health nurse's routine would also include the non-invasive testing of the patients COHb levels and to also check for methemoglobin levels to help determine if any of their specific medications are restricting oxygen delivery to any degree and compounding symptoms. They should be aware of the carbon monoxide in air evacuation levels used by fire, emergency and medical technicians and act accordingly upon discovery.
The home health nurse should also measure the patients home air for carbon dioxide levels (CO2). Air that becomes stuffy with air because the building was tightened to save heating fuel or cooling costs can lead to an abundance of CO2 and lead to additional oxidative stress and discomfort.
Heating contractors and boiler fitters should know the quality of the space they are working in, especially since they are assuming the liability of specific combustion systems. That would include boiler fitters, other water heater installers and any technician installing or servicing a gas appliance. They too should be utilizing personal CO monitors. The likeliness of these technicians working in chronic exposure levels of CO is quite high.

Carbon Monoxide Alarms
Be selective about CO alarms. It is always recommended to use the most accurate system and a low level CO alarm is required to protect more people more often. Most if not all CO alarms available for purchase at common stores do not utilize the most accurate sensors available to them. Check the PPM (Parts Per Million) testing points listed on the packaging or instructions as to the level of CO that must be present and for how long it must be above that level for the alarm sound to engage. The degree of accuracy is also good information to know as some alarms may be significantly inaccurate for those women carrying a baby, or for a new born or a person with heart problems.
Every technician or service provider entering a building should recognize health symptoms associated with carbon monoxide exposures. No one is asking an electrician or a painter or an air conditioning technician to become a health technician. However and for their own safety every technician entering a building should be aware that if they are not monitoring the CO levels, their own safety may be in jeopardy. Please take responsibility for monitoring the air you breathe.
If you are experiencing symptoms that just don’t seem to go away or they reoccur frequently, get tested for carbon monoxide poisoning. Oxidative stress can take many forms of discomfort. The test does not need to be a painful blood test unless your health care provider has not stepped up to simple, non-invasive COHb testing for diagnostic support. How does CO become a hazard?
Carbon monoxide becomes a hazard when it is being produced in enough concentrations to hurt someone and when there is an opening in a combustion system where it can get out to where it can be breathed in. In many systems, CO production can be controlled from the time of inauguration to the end of its’ life through service diligence.
Systems like cars, trucks, forklifts, motor boats, snowmobiles, jet skis, race cars, monster trucks, airplanes and all systems that use gasoline, propane, diesel or similar fuel, usually also have open exhaust systems where the potential for immediate combustion gas exposures are greater. That headache may have been triggered by a blast of CO from some every day, fun or work activity involving exposure to combustion gas containing harmful levels of carbon monoxide.
