Carbon Monoxide News September 1, 2016 – posts updated frequently

Every day is a carbon monoxide safety education day.
Scroll back in time through our archives for previous CO News links.
We can learn from others mistakes and efforts to prevent poisoning.
Carbon monoxide safety, we are all in this together.

“If you don't know what you want, you end up with a lot you don't."
Chuck Palahniuk (1962, bio link)

"I Want It Now" Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

How much carbon monoxide are you in when in any motor vehicle?

Did you know that many people do not measure the air they live in?
After prevention there is no greater awareness than measurement.

Awareness leads to quick thinking. Measurement leads to quick action.

Are you in the know?
Do I know enough about carbon monoxide and carbon monoxide poisoning to justify never knowing how much is in the air I breathe every day, everywhere I go?”

There are some people who want to be notified of the presence of carbon monoxide at levels or concentrations as soon as the gas is present, at concentrations well below those that can instigate poor health symptoms but not be high enough levels to sound the CO alarm they own.

There are some people who do not want to push a button on their CO alarm to see what low, aggravating levels of the poison might be in their home, or anywhere.

Consider low level protection for carbon monoxide and smoldering fire detection problems; don't leave anyone behind. CO Experts

Philly's smog sickens thousands of city's asthmatic kids, report says

Contaminated, smoggy air is directly worsening asthma conditions in thousands of Philadelphia's children, according to a study released Wednesday by an environmental group… An estimated 12,206 childhood asthma attacks occur in Philadelphia each year because of smog produced by nearby gas and oil operations, the Clean Air Task Force (CATF) announced… Gas and oil production such as that which occurs at refineries around Philly create the ground-level ozone that is the main constituent of smog, according to CATF…

WBUR
Last year around Sept. 1, Inspectional Services workers stopped at more than 2,000 units in the city and issued written notices for a total of 447 housing, building or environmental violations. COSA Note
We received a safety appeal announcement from the Pikes Peak Mechanical Contractors Association (PPMCA) regarding damages from severe recent hail storms in El Paso County Colorado. Don Piano (Operations Manager, Training Director, Board Member) broadcast the notice to its members with post storm reminders…

Excerpts from this announcement – “The PPMCA would like to remind you to ask your service and estimating personnel to verify the condition of the roof caps as they are called for service or are performing fall checks on heating systems…

Some roofing companies may not even want to touch the roof caps leading customers to pursue licensed heating contractors to perform the replacements. This is ideal for allowing a good inspection of the venting systems and advising customers of potential life threatening conditions. As the weather turns cooler and the heating systems begin to operate, you may experience an increase in calls for service that may relate to damaged roof caps…

Your attention to detail will be beneficial to your customers and possibly save lives… I have personally heard estimates of 65,000 roof permits expected to be obtained by the end of the year with Regional Building Department.. My roofing company told me yesterday that that is probably a low number. As the work proceeds, it may surge past projections.”

The PPMCA and partners, COSA (Carbon Monoxide Safety Association), Colorado Springs Utilities, The Pikes Peak Regional Building Department, CO Experts and IntelliTec Colleges are very glad to have trained over 160 certified carbon monoxide safety inspectors with personal monitors in our community performing entry testing on every building they go into!”
(Additional classes in El Paso County are scheduled for October, November and December.)

We have all been CO poisoned, some more than others
The following link takes you to a site with views from those who have been poisoned. The seriousness of carbon monoxide poisoning, the grief, suffering and disorientations experienced are clearly portrayed with the intent to help others and prevent future poisonings. With respect, please visit:

What is in the air you are breathing right now?
What will you be doing today; walking into poison?
Who will be responsible for the air you breathe?
You may be the only person who can prevent your own poisoning.

We are all vulnerable to carbon monoxide exposure and poisoning.
Everyone has been poisoned by CO and will be poisoned again. The degree of the poisoning depends upon allowing yourself to be in a situation where someone else controls the air you breathe and the mechanisms for alarming notification.

Please read the alarm information on the package and in the instructions that come with the carbon monoxide alarm. Know that if it is a U.L. 2034 Listed product (or CSA 6.19 Listed), it is a high level alarm that has been tested to alarm no sooner than 70 PPM at the lowest (the alarm must resist for one hour when above this level) and when over 400 PPM before 15 minutes at the highest concentration, after resisting alarming for 4 minutes when over this level.

Know when your fire department and emergency responders begin wearing their breathing apparatus and what their civilian evacuation levels are for carbon monoxide; it may be as soon as the gas is present in your presence. Pregnant women, infants & children, people with heart & respiratory struggles, those suffering depression or chronic headaches and all people of vulnerable health should be alerted as soon as the gas begins to concentrate, around 10 PPM (parts per million) or lower.

You most likely need a low level carbon monoxide detector to sound off when carbon monoxide hazards are just beginning, not after you’ve been exposed to levels that make you have headaches, flu-like symptoms, increased tiredness, heart stresses or worse.

Do not take risks with carbon monoxide. Take responsibility for the air you breathe and the combustion systems you are responsible for. If you don’t do it for yourself, do it for others, unless you think $45.00, high level protection is good enough.

Help prevent injuries and deaths; don’t guess about carbon monoxide. Measure carbon monoxide for safety and knowledge. The more you test the more you learn.

Reforestation Doesn't Fight Climate Change Unless It's Done Right
ThinkProgress
But planting trees in an effort to slow climate change is a complicated solution to a complicated problem — and experts caution that countries looking to implement robust reforestation programs need to be extremely deliberate in the kind of reforestation and forest management that they choose… “Trees, as they grow, take carbon out of the atmosphere. The more wood you have, the more carbon is on land and out of the atmosphere.”

Humans Sparked Warming Nearly 200 Years Ago

“It was an extraordinary finding,” said Dr Abram. “It was one of those moments where science really surprised us. But the results were clear. What we are witnessing today started about 180 years ago.” Corals, like trees, have annual growth rings, and these too can tell a story of climate change. By bringing together coral measurements and evidence from sea floor sediments, the scientists recorded a steady turn for the warmer in ocean temperatures early in the 19th century…
