Light a small candle. Place a clear, glass jar over it. Watch the flame first weaken, then the wick smokes and holds on to the last dot of fire and then dies out. Fire can only exist in the presence of oxygen. The quality of the fire is dependent upon the quality of the fuel and the oxygen/fuel blend presented in sufficient heat.

Humans are aerobic organisms, living only in the presence of oxygen. Every part of the human body relies on specific amounts of oxygen to complete the chemical processes that occur within each living cell necessary for the maintenance of life or metabolism. Aerobic metabolism is the creation of energy through the combustion of carbohydrates and fats in the presence of oxygen. Oxygen reduction due to carbon monoxide inhalations results in immediate detriments characterized by the concentrations of the displacing agent allowed in, and for how long it remains. Humans need oxygen.

Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning to yourself and others. Measure carbon monoxide for safety and knowledge. The more you test the more you learn. Measurement is education at its best. Bob Dwyer, CSME Carbon Monoxide Safety

BOSTON -- In recent years, research has suggested that carbon monoxide, the highly toxic gas emitted from auto exhausts and faulty heating systems, can be used to treat certain inflammatory medical conditions. Now a study led by a research team at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) shows for the first time that carbon monoxide may also have a role to play in treating cancer…

How cold? Snow possible in Fresno, say forecasters
Merced Sun-Star

Last year, there were two carbon monoxide-related deaths in Fresno, said Koby Johns, spokesman for the Fresno Fire Department… "Carbon monoxide alarms should be installed outside each sleeping area of the home, including the basement," Johns said. "Carbon monoxide can also be produced by smoldering fires -- never close the damper or flue with hot ashes in the fireplace. A closed damper will help the fire to heat up again and will force toxic carbon monoxide into the house."

Many families will sit down after their Christmas dinner and fall asleep by the fireside. But have they eaten or drunk too much, or are they suffering the effects of carbon monoxide poisoning? That's the question posed by Lynn Griffiths, founder and president of the charity Carbon Monoxide Awareness, whose own family suffered the debilitating effects of carbon monoxide poisoning in their home for more than a decade, without even knowing it was carbon monoxide that was the cause of the problem…

Please read the alarm information on the packageand in the instructions. Know when your fire department and emergency responders begin wearing their breathing apparatus and what their civilian evacuation levels are for carbon monoxide; it may be before 70 PPM. It is for pregnant women, infants & children, the elderly and all people of vulnerable health. Bob Dwyer, CSME Carbon Monoxide Safety

Consider low level protection for carbon monoxide and smoldering fire detection problems; don't leave anyone behind.

Remember that carbon monoxide (CO) is odorless. However it can be present within the common everyday “smells” of combustion & exhaust systems, like when you first turn on your gas oven. Also, automotive exhaust has an odor.

Exhaust from a vehicle left running in a garage is an especially dangerous practice and is even more dangerous if the garage is attached to a house, apartment or any building, even though the big doors may be open. Do you know how much CO you or your children are in if you let the vehicle run inside the garage to warm up and then get in? If you did, you would not practice that “warm up” technique.

People have been sickened or died while keeping their motor vehicles running while talking, sleeping or romantically occupied. Factors that contribute to this type of poisoning are as simple as prevailing winds bringing exhaust into the vehicle or deep snow, mud, ditches and walls restricting the safe exhaust away from the vehicle.

You may be exposed to CO poisoning when you burn charcoal, lamp oil, alcohol or camping gas in an enclosed tent, camper or room. You may also be exposed to CO when there is cigar, cigarette or pipe tobacco smoke. Garbage, leaf, brush or forest fires also can produce sickening to deadly levels of carbon monoxide.

Combustion gas from propane fueled forklifts, floor buffers & power washers can also contain poisonous levels of carbon monoxide.

Measure carbon monoxide for safety and knowledge. The more you test the more you learn. Measurement is education at its best.
