Carbon Monoxide Measurement, a key to good health, life and death
The use of personal monitors, air packs and the non-invasive monitoring of the blood COHb% are critical steps to help insure the safety of fire fighters, incident support personnel and health technicians, and victims of smoke and carbon monoxide exposures. We are all potential victims of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Taking the right steps properly tooled and prepared, prevents additional injury and death. Diligent measurement of air in recovery areas where COHb and heart rate can be monitored while supplemental oxygen is administered, assists with transport expediencies and hospital preparedness for the required victim/patient care.
Document all measurements for every situation. How much in air? How much in victim? You hold a key, if you measure. Bob Dwyer CSME Carbon Monoxide Safety

My own experience is somewhat different. I invariably lose concentration and often fall asleep in rooms full with many people. A few years ago, I measured the carbon dioxide concentration in a conference room. Before the room filled up with people the concentration was about 400 ppm (parts per million); about one hour later it grew to 1,200 ppm… Forklift ruled likely cause of farm tragedy Updated

- 70 PPM to 149 PPM – resist one hour, must alarm before 4 hours
Please read the alarm information on the package and in the instructions. Know when your fire department and emergency responders begin wearing their breathing apparatus and what their civilian evacuation levels are for carbon monoxide; it may be before 70 PPM. It is for pregnant women, infants & children, the elderly and all people of vulnerable health. Bob Dwyer, CSME Carbon Monoxide Safety

Increased education, awareness can prevent carbon monoxide poisoning
Minnesota Department of Commerce
SAINT PAUL, MN – Each year about 50,000 people visit emergency rooms in the United States for CO poisoning, and more than 500 die each year from this silent, odorless, colorless gas. As part of Winter Hazard Awareness Week (November 5-9), the Minnesota Department of Commerce warns Minnesotans of the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning and to take steps to avoid this “silent killer.”
