“The doer alone learneth.” Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900, bio link)

What did you breathe today?
When a person inhales carbon monoxide, a chain reaction begins and compounds health according to how much CO for how long and what the existing health conditions of this person may be. If a person has been in breathing atmospheres where CO has been chronically present, exhibited symptoms could include MODS (Multiple Organ Dysfunctions).

Hypoxia is a deficiency in the amount of oxygen reaching body tissues. This reduction of oxygen causes a very strong drive to correct the deficiency which results in various stresses on all bodily functions; the greater the deficiency, the greater the trauma and dysfunction. The cells send out signals that oxygen has reduced and the heart reacts by working harder to get more oxygen to the requested sites.

Measurement is education. Get to recognize the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning. Test for it immediately in a person when symptoms are presented. This may lead to source discovery and prevention of future poisonings. Measurement raises awareness, it can be contagious.

The lowest U.L. 2034 & CSA 6.19 carbon monoxide alarm test point is:
- 70 PPM to 149 PPM – resist one hour, must alarm before 4 hours

Please read the alarm information on the package and in the instructions. Know when your fire department and emergency responders begin wearing their breathing apparatus and what their civilian evacuation levels are for carbon monoxide; it may be before 70 PPM. It is for pregnant women, infants & children, the elderly and all people of vulnerable health. Bob Dwyer, CSME Carbon Monoxide Safety

Increased education, awareness can prevent carbon monoxide poisoning
Minnesota Department of Commerce

SAINT PAUL, MN – Each year about 50,000 people visit emergency rooms in the United States for CO poisoning, and more than 500 die each year from this silent, odorless, colorless gas. As part of Winter Hazard Awareness Week (November 5-9), the Minnesota Department of Commerce warns Minnesotans of the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning and to take steps to avoid this “silent killer.”
