Carbon Monoxide News October 30, 2012 - posts updated frequently - Every day is a carbon monoxide safety education day

“In the face of an obstacle which is impossible to overcome, stubbornness is stupid.” Simone de Beauvoir (1908-1986, bio link)

CO alarm standards - When do they sound off?

Who is responsible for the air you breathe? Do you know enough about the threats of being poisoned and impacted by carbon monoxide gas?

A driver in a delivery cargo van has a loose fitting rear door and the exhaust from the tail pipe is drawn back into the open-to-the-cab storage area, allowing this combustion gas and carbon monoxide into the breathable air. The driver’s COHb% increases throughout the day, even though they may step out of the environment for minutes at a time, all day. The driver’s reaction time diminishes, perhaps the eyes get a little heavy and “BAM” an accident; someone hurt, someone dead, property damage, disruption of the traffic flow and need for emergency services ensues.

If you measured the air for carbon monoxide inside your motor vehicle accurately, (or any vehicle that you might be in as a passenger) you will be educated on how often you and others around you breathe in carbon monoxide. Some of you will be shocked. Hopefully all of you will quit warming your cars up inside garages and enclosed spaces if you do this.

This isn’t just a one trip measurement. The more you measure in this circumstance, the more you will learn and the more you will learn to avoid being poisoned, though the threat may be constantly around you. Bob Dwyer, CSME Carbon Monoxide Safety

Carbon Monoxide News October 27, 2012 - posts updated frequently - Every day is a carbon monoxide safety education day

“Any problem, big or small, within a family, always seems to start with bad communication. Someone isn't listening.” Emma Thompson (1959, bio link)

CO alarm standards - When do they sound off?

My thanks goes out to those that hosted and attended  my Carbon Monoxide Safety training programs in Colorado Springs, Colorado this week. The recent tragedy in your community once again sent out an alarm to residents that carbon monoxide threats are nothing to be cavalier about. The poison is bigger and stronger than any ego on the planet. Get an alarm that alerts you to the hazard before you begin to feel the symptoms.

Winter weather is coming or here already in the northern climates. Get those furnaces and all interior combustion systems tested for carbon monoxide generation and have them tuned up by certified and the continually trained heating technician. You must make sure they have the proper testing instruments to complete the task successfully, otherwise, they are ripping you off, perhaps leaving you and/or your family in danger.

Do not be fooled or lulled into complacence. Carbon Monoxide is a clear and present danger.
Bob Dwyer, CSME Carbon Monoxide Safety.

Carbon Monoxide News October 26, 2012 - posts updated frequently - Every day is a carbon monoxide safety education day

“If we choose, we can live in a world of comforting illusion.”
Noam Chomsky (1928, bio link)

CO News replay link: CO alarm standards - When do they sound off?

There are two circumstances that make carbon monoxide a hazard:
1. Carbon monoxide is produced in a high enough concentration to hurt someone.
2. There is an escape path for CO to reach people.

Carbon monoxide must be measured. It is odorless but many combustion gas systems do produce odors and carbon monoxide is found to be blended in with those odors. Due to human reliance on combustion driven systems, the odors are often accepted as “normal”. Do not be fooled. Be responsible for the air you breathe and protect yourself. You will also be protecting others with the right test or alarm products
