Increased education, awareness can prevent carbon monoxide poisoning
Minnesota Department of Commerce
SAINT PAUL, MN – Each year about 50,000 people visit emergency rooms in the United States for CO poisoning, and more than 500 die each year from this silent, odorless, colorless gas. As part of Winter Hazard Awareness Week (November 5-9), the Minnesota Department of Commerce warns Minnesotans of the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning and to take steps to avoid this “silent killer.”
Heating season tune ups and combustion analysis
How much carbon monoxide is your heating system or water heater producing? Did the technician provide you with a measurement report of all the tests performed when last serviced? Do you understand what was done? Were all combustion systems tested?
If combustion systems are already producing CO in high enough concentrations to hurt someone and then struggle at venting, the danger increases; CO generation could increase and combustion gases will more likely get into breathable air. It is vital when verifying the safety, integrity and compliance of a combustion system that a carbon monoxide gas sample be evaluated as well the venting pressure of the exhaust gases.
If the system is producing harmful levels of CO, the technician can make corrections to improve the safety and efficiency of the system under the normal working conditions it is expected to perform under. There are times however, when competing building pressure obstacles make the task more difficult. Bob Dwyer, CSME Carbon Monoxide Safety
