CO alarm standards - When do they sound off?

American Red Cross - Disaster Relief
The storm known as Sandy has resulted in staggering losses to life, health, property and spirit. Perhaps our generosity can assist in adding aid & comfort. Bob Dwyer, CSME Carbon Monoxide Safety

Power outages after this recent storm disaster  increase the use of gasoline fueled generators to provide electrical power for individuals and facilities, but also the use of combustion engines for clean up, repair and restoration. The exposures to random, high level carbon monoxide gases increase; be aware, be protected.

Be a friend, tell a friend,  “Protect yourself and others with a battery operated carbon monoxide alarm.” Put one in your back pack, fit one in your purse. Have one where you are sleeping. There are too many people misusing electrical generators, gasoline power tools & equipment and the deaths continue to rise.

A personal CO monitor clips on your belt, this may be your best mobile option. I just got a low level CO alarm that’s about the size of a deck of cards that fits in my coat pocket, about the same size as the personal CO monitor on my belt loop.

There are good options for protection  and acknowledging the presence of CO before illness and for sure before deadly levels that can be more injurious. An option that is not so good is to not be protected from CO poisoning during these trying times.
