Every technician or service provider entering a building should recognize health symptoms associated with carbon monoxide exposures. No one is asking an electrician or a painter or an air conditioning technician to become a health technician. However and for their own safety every technician entering a building should be aware that if they are not monitoring the CO levels, their own safety may be in jeopardy. You might want to stop by an HVAC supply house and look at what types of smaller, hand-held carbon monoxide test instruments they have available. Your measurements on the job might make a life altering difference.
Ambulance and other first-on-scene responders, especially police officers, should wear personal monitors for carbon monoxide at all times. These alarms should be set to alarm at levels determined as self contained breathing apparatus levels for firefighters but no later than 35 PPM and, as soon as it reaches the specified measurement. There are numerous incidences every year where responders have had to be treated or transported due to CO poisoning at the scene of a rescue or heart attack call.
