“Real integrity is doing the right thing, knowing that nobody's going to know whether you did it or not.” Oprah Winfrey (1954, bio link)
A friend of mine recently sent me a news article from England that estimated over 35 million people from the United Kingdom do not have carbon monoxide protection in their homes, homes that burn fossil fuels for heating & cooking & pleasure. The discussion was being led towards an estimate of how many homes in the United States lack carbon monoxide alert protection where it is needed.
I don’t have a numerical answer but I can say that even those numbers in the U.S. who do have carbon monoxide alarms in their homes are not adequately protected from the gas at levels that can make one sick for days, weeks, months or longer, if their alarms are high level alarms. The alarms most commonly purchased and mandated by law in some states, can be manufactured to be more accurate at lower levels and give all people everywhere better protection, but for some reason over the years, the major manufacturers have not even introduced an alternative product for people of vulnerable health, perhaps someone in your household.
There are better alarms, ones that alert you to the presence of carbon monoxide at the early stages of a fire or an appliance malfunction that can mean the difference between life and death, a good day and a bad day. There are better alarms available, ones that alert you to the poison at levels around 10 parts per million (PPM).
The head of household has to decide on how much those in their care are worth protecting at what level. The alarm you have, if it is listed under the U.L. 2034 Standard is a high level alarm. Bob Dwyer, CSME Carbon Monoxide Safety

The lowest U.L. 2034 & CSA 6.19 carbon monoxide alarm test point is:
- 70 PPM to 149 PPM –resist one hour, must alarm before 4 hours
Please read the alarm information on the packageand in the instructions. Know when your fire department and emergency responders begin wearing their breathing apparatus and what their civilian evacuation levels are for carbon monoxide; it may be before 70 PPM. It is for pregnant women, infants & children, the elderly and all people of vulnerable health. Bob Dwyer, CSME Carbon Monoxide Safety
Consider low level protection for carbon monoxide and smoldering fire detection problems; don't leave anyone behind.
