“Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves.” Carl Jung (1871-1961, bio link)
Two things make carbon monoxide a hazard:
1. It is produced in enough concentration to hurt someone.
2. It has an open path to where it can be breathed in.
Tune up your furnaces, boilers, water heaters, space heaters, wall heaters, cooking systems and whatever else has the ability to generate carbon monoxide if it is not tuned or set up properly. So, the first step in preventing poisoning is to reduce the opportunities for exposures, those you have control over. Get your appliances checked no less than once a year and make sure the engineers and technicians working on them are professionally certified and have the correct instrumentation to do the work.
Many combustion systems have a clear path for combustion gases to exit the combustion chamber and enter directly into breathable air. This includes automobiles, trucks, propane forklifts, barbeques, gasoline fueled generators, camping lanterns to name a few. One has to be aware of this direct contact with combustion gases and respect the damage those gases can do. Avoid breathing them in.
Of course a good working carbon monoxide alarm can alert you to when carbon monoxide is present in the air you breathe. You have to decide if you want an alarm that will allow you to be sick and affected by the poison before there is enough of it to make it more serious and finally set off the alarm or you want to be notified as soon as the gas begins to build up, before low level or worse health symptoms develop.
