Residents urged to check carbon monoxide, smoke detectors
Steamboat Pilot & Today
Steamboat Springs — As the nights get colder and residents begin turning on the heat, local fire chiefs are encouraging everyone to make sure their furnaces and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly. On Thursday morning, a North Routt County family tested positive for exposure to carbon monoxide possibly from the furnace the family started using a week ago. North Routt Fire Protection District Chief Bob Reilley said that a CO detector went off at the home Wednesday night and that the family members had classic symptoms of CO poisoning such as headaches and nausea. Another typical symptom of CO poisoning is feeling tired, which can be deadly if a victim falls asleep.

A look at a few carbon monoxide alarm standards
U.L. 2034 and CSA 6.19 (United States & Canada)
· 30 PPM CO and under, no visual display allowed,
· 30+ PPM CO – 70 PPM visual display allowed, no alarm test point
· 70+ PPM CO and under 150 PPM of CO; test point, resist one hour but must alarm in four hours.
· 150+ PPM CO and under 400 PPM of CO; test point, resist alarming for 10 minutes but must alarm before 50 minutes.
· 400+ PPM CO and higher; test point, resist alarming for four minutes but must alarm before 15 minutes.
The European Standard - EN50291 For Carbon Monoxide Alarms
· 30 PPM CO, the alarm must resist for at least 120 minutes when over this level
· 50 PPM CO, the alarm must resist for the first 60 minutes but must activate before 90 minutes
· 100 PPM CO, the alarm must resist for the first 10 minutes but must activate before 40 minutes
· 300 PPM CO, the alarm must activate within 3 minutes
There are some safety benefits in the European Standard - EN50291 For Carbon Monoxide Alarms over the U.L. 2034 and CSA 6.19 Standards for Carbon Monoxide Alarms include:
· Permitted to visually display any level of CO (U.L. & CSA listed units are not allowed to display under 30 PPM)
· Allowed to alarm above 30 PPM if level remains after 2 hours
· Near immediate warnings (immediate detection & response) are permitted above 300 PPM. (U.L. & CSA listed units must resist alarming for 10 minutes, but must alarm after one hour.)
There are news stories found within the archives of this blog that reveal the following list of symptoms and some others, were experienced by those victims who were glad they had a carbon monoxide alarm that alerted them to the poisoning, but note that there were illness symptoms experienced prior to the alarm sounding, anywhere from hours, to months, to years. Please reference Carbon Monoxide Survivor.
Don’t ignore those symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning that include headache, confusion, nausea, depression, weakness, light-headedness, shortness of breath, heart distresses and vomiting. Ask to be tested for carbon monoxide poisoning. These are some of the known symptoms.

Carbon Monoxide News September 25, 2012 - updated frequently
“Life’s #1 Blessing is offered by every Child, to Love, to HUG, to Nourish, to Enrich, to Educate, to Inspire, and to Encourage in every endeavor and guide toward a HEALTHY & HAPPY LIFE.” George Kerr (1933 - info)
Today’s posted CO news links reflect recent postings where the suggestions for carbon monoxide safety and poisoning prevention include:
· Remember to have carbon monoxide protection and notification, at least from the high levels of 70 PPM and higher, but low level protection beginning over 5 PPM is best.
· Remember to make sure your CO alarms have power via battery or direct electrical current or both if required.
· Do not use gas ovens or other combustion systems that are not intended for heating as a heating source. It is recommended to exhaust oven and cooking gases out of the living space.
· Take note of upsetting health symptoms you are experiencing or that more than one of you living or working in the same space may be.
Safety Note: The exhaust fan used to remove gas cooking gasses out of the breathable air may exert enough reverse pressure through air being forced out of the living space, that it might interfere with the exhaust pressure on atmospherically vented appliances, listed as Category I – those with a non positive vent pressure. Building pressure testing and verification is vital to the safe performance of this combustion equipment. The more exhaust fans, the more foreseeable venting problems (that have solutions).

“It is easier to prevent bad habits than to break them.”
Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790, bio link)
Big note about this first warehouse workers story:
They tracked the “source” of carbon monoxide to a room where they were “charging” electric forklifts. The fire department measured CO the highest in this room. It must be noted that many CO test instruments, including those used by professional investigators, have inexpensive sensors that are affected by cross interferences of other gases. One of those gases is hydrogen, a common occurrence gas that is generated by charging vehicle batteries. As far as people in the warehouse being ill with symptoms…? Hydrogen gas is non-toxic but if it dominates an air space it can contribute to illness symptoms when breathed in. This event requires a little more information and testing of the area and test instruments to claim carbon monoxide was actually present. If there were gas fueled forklifts, this would be a different view. 18 people were taken to the hospital; we'll have to wait to see if they were tested for carbon monoxide exposure. Bob Dwyer, CSME Carbon Monoxide Safety
