“It is not so much for its beauty that the forest makes a claim upon men's hearts, as for that subtle something, that quality of air that emanation from old trees, that so wonderfully changes and renews a weary spirit.” Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894, bio link)

Carbon monoxide must be measured with sensor technology  designed for that specific gas. Measurement includes the ambient air or the air we breathe and in the combustion gases of furnaces, water heaters, boilers, cooking systems and the other hydrocarbon fueled systems used around us every day; these are the systems that burn oil, gasoline, natural gas, coal, wood, bagasse, or any bio-fuel. CO can also be measured in the human body by drawing blood and testing or non-invasively through pulse co-oximetry or breath analysis.

Your home or the building you work in or visit may contain  malfunctioning furnaces, boilers, water heaters, space heaters, cooking systems or fireplaces that are already producing large amounts of CO. You may also be exposed to CO on a boat, on a bus, in a car, in a house, on a street, at a construction site, almost everywhere; be careful! It is not unreasonable to have one of the small carbon monoxide measuring devices with you as you might a cell phone or a wristwatch. We are talking about carbon monoxide you know.

“Change your life today. Don't gamble on the future, act now, without delay.” Simone de Beauvoir (1908-1986, bio link)

There is more to a furnace tune-up than changing the filter and removing dirt.

Outline of some tasks performed
•Follow manufacturer specifications and all regional codes
•Constant carbon monoxide measurement while in building
•Verify presence of working smoke & carbon monoxide alarms
•Combustion air requirements verified
•Gas pipe layout and sizing review, leak testing
•Vent condition & sizing verified
•Combustion analysis data/ appliance testing map
•Building pressure and vented appliance draft tests
•Customer education/exit interview and ambient carbon monoxide test
•Follow up from office/company representative
• Billing

Too many times appliances are installed or tuned up without testing.  Consumers have a trust in the servicing company and the jurisdictive bodies that monitor them. There are way too many incidences where combustion equipment is not verified. This may be compounded by the lack of inspection. In many instances the inspection does not require performance verification. In these cases consumers do not get what they are paying for. Bob Dwyer CSME, Carbon Monoxide Safety

CO alarm standards know when you are protected

“It does not require many words to speak the truth.”
Chief Joseph (1840-1905, bio link)

Every day, every month and every year  awareness associated with carbon monoxide increases as the diligence of study and collaboration of professionals also increases. As awareness increases, poisonings are prevented. It is impossible to cover every circumstance associated with carbon monoxide poisoning in a short, daily document like this.

Take some time to scroll back in time on this blog  and find circumstances and some relevant discussion regarding the activities and begin putting them together. You may find the variety of circumstances and the noted efforts of community responders to educate and reduce poisonings helps demonstrate the instructions and principles of this carbon monoxide safety effort.

Begin testing and taking responsibility of your air space,  the air you are breathing. Bob Dwyer, CSME Carbon Monoxide Safety
