Those who have knowledge don't predict. Those who predict don't have knowledge.” Lao Tzu (BC)

CAMPING AND CARBON MONOXIDE
There was a time when camping meant pitching a tent, building a campfire for cooking, staying warm and socializing; sometimes a sleeping bag and the stars were all that were required. That image has changed to full parking lots that also include small homes on wheels that contain combustion conveniences of electricity, cooking, heating, refrigeration and air conditioning. A COSA note to all campers from tenters and boaters to motor-homers and lodgers everywhere:
When poisonous carbon monoxide is produced in dangerous concentrations in fire of any kind, including during combustion in liquid fueled electric generators while camping in tents, living & traveling in motor homes and caravans, it has been known to make some people sick or has killed them. Even little stoves & lamps used inside tents have contributed to injury & death.

The common, inexpensive carbon monoxide alarms available on the market and listed as U.L. 2034 (or another country’s equivalent) that are battery operated have been tested to alarm at high levels of CO, beginning at 70 PPM. These may not protect you from low level atmospheres that could be a problem if you have some pre-existing medical condition and were chronically in lower levels, but you have some standard of protection to levels that will kill you as it did to the man named in the first story of today’s posting.

Please read the manufacturer instructions regarding operating temperatures of the U.L. 2034 Listed & tested alarms. Camping temperatures & humidity may interfere with the accuracy of the alarm’s sensing capabilities. You might be better off with a few of these on a camping or lodging trip than perhaps other things allowed for.

Living in a Combustion Culture: OZONE ALERT
State of the Air: 2011 Report: State of the Air 2011
American Lung Association
For 12 years, the American Lung Association has analyzed data from state air quality monitors to compile the State of the Air report. ......... Even low levels of ozone may be deadly. A large study of 48 U.S. cities looked at the association between ozone and all-cause mortality during the summer months. Ozone concentrations by city in the summer months ranged from 16 percent to 80 percent lower than EPA currently considers safe. Researchers found that ozone at those lower levels was associated with deaths from cardiovascular disease, strokes, and respiratory causes.

You may have wondered why “ozone action day” warnings are sometimes followed by recommendations to avoid activities such as mowing your lawn or refilling your gas tank during daylight hours. Lawn mower exhaust and gasoline vapors are VOCs that could turn into ozone in the heat and sun. Take away the sunlight and ozone doesn’t form, so refilling your gas tank after dark is better on high ozone days. Since we can’t control sunlight and heat, we must reduce the chemical raw ingredients if we want to reduce ozone.

Who is at risk from breathing ozone?Five groups of people are especially vulnerable to the effects of breathing ozone:

•children and teens;

•anyone 65 and older;

•people who work or exercise outdoors;

•people with existing lung diseases, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (also known as COPD, which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis); and

•“responders” who are otherwise healthy but for some reason react more strongly to ozone.

No Law shall be enacted that does not provide EQUAL PROTECTION under said Law to all Citizens.
States that have issued carbon monoxide alarm laws requiring U.L. 2034 Listed carbon monoxide alarms do not protect people with certain medical conditions. The disclaimer written on carbon monoxide alarms listed under the U.L. 2034 Standard states: "Pregnant women, infants, children, senior citizens, persons with heart or respiratory problems and smokers may experience symptoms at lower levels of exposure than noted. Individuals with medical problems may consider using warning devices which provide audible and visual signals for carbon monoxide concentrations under 30ppm." COSA NOTES that the test points for these U.L. alarms have been tested to alarm at 70, 150 and 400 PPM of CO, unless otherwise stated.
